Travel | Vilnius, Lithuania

Friday, 10 March 2017

We had a reading week in February at university and my best friend and I went on a short trip to Vilnius, Lithuania! We had an absolutely amazing time there, it's a beautiful city and I thought I would do my general post about Vilnius to give you some information about the city and then I can do some more in depth posts about what the city has to offer!

Where to Stay

We stayed in Fabrika Hostel which is a great hostel in the city centre of Vilnius. It's right near the KGB museum which is something you will definitely want to do and is within 10 minutes walk of Cathedral square which is the start of the old town of Vilnius. I would highly recommend Fabrika as it's a great hostel. It didn't have loads going on in terms of hostel activities but the accommodation was great for a hostel for the three nights that we stayed there!

Where to Eat

The friend that I was with is vegetarian and I eat mainly vegetarian food which we did find was a slight issue when looking for places that made traditional Lithuanian food that was also veggie. We did have an amazing traditional beer snack at Forto Dvaras that we absolutely loved which was rye bread with cheese sauce and we also found an amazing vegan restaurant in the university district called Gyvas Baras which did amazing food so they are two places that I would definitely recommend!

What to Do

We filled our days in Lithuania really well! On the first day we saw the Gate of Dawn and walked down Pilies Street which has loads of beautiful churches on! We then went on a free walking tour which was amazing and I would highly recommend as it covers loads of different parts of Vilnius and tells you some history! Uzupis is an especially cool part of the tour! On the second day we went to Trakai Castle which was absolutely amazing and my favourite part of the trip! It also snowed on that day which made the castle doubly magical! On our final day we went to the Museum of Genocide Victims which was very sad but definitely something that you should do whilst you are there as it shows you the sad history of Lithuania which I felt we should learn about. We also climbed the Hill of Three Crosses and had a beautiful view across Vilnius before we got on the bus to the airport!

I would definitely recommend Vilnius as a slightly different weekend break in Eastern Europe! We had three days there which definitely felt like enough although I'm sure there would have been a few other things we could have done as well if we had had another couple of days but three days felt like enough! I will do some more in depth posts about it in the next few weeks!
